The company’s revenue reached 432.92 billion Japanese yen (approximately $2.8 billion), a stark contrast to the 498.22 billion yen expected by analysts. Similarly, net profit figures fell short, registering at 128.53 billion yen compared to the anticipated 136.16 billion yen. This marked a year-on-year decline of 6% in net profit, highlighting multiple challenges facing the gaming giant.

The declining performance raises concerns regarding the prolonged lifespan of the Nintendo Switch, a console that has garnered massive success since its launch in 2017. As it approaches its eighth anniversary, interest in the console appears to be diminishing, prompting speculation about the future and the anticipated successor, often referred to as the Switch 2.

With the impending release of the Switch 2, Nintendo is faced with a critical juncture—how to retain its loyal user base while enticing them towards adopting the new technology. A teaser trailer released last month hinted at the exciting features of the Switch 2, but crucial details such as pricing and the set release date remain undisclosed, with hopes pinned on Nintendo’s upcoming Direct event on April 2. This figure represents a staggering 30.6% decline from the previous year, emphasizing a significant downturn in consumer interest in an aging console.

The Nintendo Switch has been a formidable player in the gaming industry, having sold a total of 150.86 million units since its inception. It stands as the company’s second-most successful console to date, surpassed only by the Nintendo DS, which sold 154.02 million units. A core element of this success has been the strong engagement of 129 million active users, demonstrated by their investment in a steady stream of hit games featuring iconic franchises such as Pokémon, Zelda, and Super Mario.

George Jijiashvili, a senior analyst at Omdia, provided insight into the complexities surrounding Nintendo’s situation. According to Jijiashvili, managing the transition successfully poses the greatest challenge—demonstrating the value and necessity of upgrading to the Switch 2 while ensuring that dedicated fans of the original Switch remain engaged and supported.

Analysts predict that the Switch 2 is likely to debut in the first half of 2025, with an optimistic forecast of 14.7 million units to be sold in its initial year. However, as Jijiashvili points out, outpacing the original Switch’s sales will be a formidable task, requiring thoughtful strategies and robust marketing from Nintendo.
